April 2012: Fashioning Feathers at the Royal Alberta Museum

This includes the BIOGRAPHY OF A LIE – body jewellery for birds used in the plumage trade. These works adorn museum specimens in a dedicated cabinet.

New work for the exhibition includes a bookwork made for a new Hummingbird Display where eight specimens rotate to flash their iridescence. I documented responses to the Hummingbird Cabinet in the Natural History Museum in London, for example below.

BY AIR / PRIORITY

A package just flying to Queensland for the artists’ exhibition accompanying 4th Biennial Australian Animal Studies Conference 2011.

This new work on swallows points towards their arrival as South Africa’s Bird of the Year in Durban, November 2011. In the same month, United Nations Climate Change Conference delegates will be welcomed at the New King Shaka airport, which shares airspace with the swallows landing in their millions on a long-established roost.

Some works from ‘THE BIOGRAPHY OF A LIE’ (see archive) now on show in an exhibition in Edmonton, Alberta:

The latest model for egret / aigrette, a piece of bird body jewellery, is a snowy egret, shot in 1909 by an Arthur Elliot. At that time, snowy egret populations were being decimated for the plumage trade.

New work by Foster and Patchett – ‘stuffed bird atached’ – contextualises two exhibits (the head of a bird of paradise, and a bird on a hat).
